My Diary, my story

Song Linzhang

This is a fictional story of a young girl of the Tang dynasty

Dear Diary,
Today father has moved to the imperial court. I'm so happy for him. Finally we can have enough cloth to make clothes and food to fill our stomach. Father is now officially the official in charge of the measuring of grain paid as tax to the court. Our Empress Wu must be such a fair and worthy leader to promote so many gifted people. Little Brother Lu Wei has woken up. I should go and tend to him now or he will cry and wake up father and he won't be get enough sleep to be able to travel to the court early tomorrow.
Dear Diary,
Today father will not be home until night so I will need to go to the market and buy some meat and vegetables for dinner. I will also use the excess money to buy some cloth. Perhaps Mei Liang will let me have the purple silk square to embroider on today. I will try a lotus pattern because I know it will please Mother. The marketplace of Chang'an is just so busy at the moment. I hope I can get back here in time to do the laundry by the river and set dinner out.
Dear Diary,
So many people! I could barely squeeze through to the meat stall. I passed the fruit market and saw this strange yellow curvy fruit. Apparently, the seller said it was some sort of exotic fruit from somewhere off the islands. I was so tempted to buy it but I had to make sure I had enough money to buy meat and vegetables first-then I would come back. Fortunately I had enough money to buy a bunch.I had wanted to buy it in order to celebrate father's new office in the palace and a new start in life. It smelt slightly strange but aromatic. Mother was quite annoyed at first because she had wanted to save for some new jewellery for the village meeting and I was afraid she was going to scold me. Fortunately, she was in a good mood so she brushed it off. It turned out to be a good choice anyway because after dinner, Mother bought out the fruit and handed it to Father. It was quite funny watching them try to open it and to be honest we made quite a mess of it but at least we finally managed to get at the flesh inside. It was white, sweet and sticky with a that strong aromatic smell just like the smell that I had smelt when I first handled it on my way home. Later, I found out that this fruit was called a 'banana'.
